About the Building

The Cupola is located in a historic building on the square in Clarksville, Texas. Built in 1866, the building was primarily a pharmacy/soda shop downstairs and doctors/dentists offices upstairs for much of it’s history. The wife and I purchased it in December 2009 when the Blackmon Pharmacy moved to a new building just south of the square. Apparently I have a fascination with towers. At the price…it was hard to pass up.

As an artist and a writer, dreams of an art/workshop or such were percolating…but since I have a LONG way to go before retirement from the day job that actually pays for all these shenanigans, we are taking it slowly. We sold antiques/etc for a couple years there just to have something going on.

Recently, I’ve cleared it out and am remodeling it with the idea that it will be my gallery, workshop, and offices for Stormrider Press. We also intend to host event space, art parties/lessons, and the like. Perhaps even coffee/candy at some point.

We named the gallery/business “The Cupola” after the tower, or “Cupola” on the corner of this gorgeous building.

As you may imagine, owning a 150 year old building comes with its challenges. Electrical work, plumbing, bathrooms, masonry work, residing the tower, roof work, HVAC, not to mention about twenty, 10-foot tall windows that need rebuilt…we tackle it all. We will document those adventures here.
